In this series of articles, we’ve covered the physical symptoms
of menopause and the minor emotional and mental ones, too. In Part
III, we noted that a large range of treatments, including natural
remedies like black cohosh and soy isoflavones, exist, and we also
noted that emotional and mental symptoms often experienced by women
as they enter perimenopause don’t fit into major and minor
categories like physical ones do. Instead, they mostly vary by intensity.
Consequently, they also vary as to how severely they can affect
a woman’s life. When mood shifts involving sadness or irritability
and mental disorder such as lack of concentration start to severely
affect a woman’s life in serious ways, then the emotional
and mental symptoms of perimenopause can be considered to be major.
Once a symptom becomes major – perhaps irritability causes
a lack of patience with coworkers – treatment is certainly
the correct route to take.

When
you do seek medical help for your symptoms, make sure to “own”
your own body. Do research before you go; be prepared with questions.
Not all of them, but some medical practitioners have a narrow view
of treatment: HRT or nothing. Yet, medications often have severe
side-effects of their own, and physicians must “play”
with doses to get them just right This is one of the reasons that
natural remedies such as black cohosh and soy isoflavones can be
so useful –.these two (and many other) treatment options have
few to no side effects at all. Just be prepared, and always consider
alternatives to traditional medical therapies.
