Isoflavones
and Postmenopausal Women with hypercholesterolemia
Article Summary:
This clinical study investigates the effects of isoflavones on vascular
reactivity, lipid levels, and markers of inflammation in women during
postmenopause. Forty women, all of whom were postmenopausal and
hypercholesterolemic, were given 90 mg of isoflavone supplements
for a period of 6 weeks. A separate group of women were used as
a placebo group to compare the results to.
Before the study, the women's flow-mediated vasodilation, response
to nictroglycerin, urinary isoflavone levels, nitrite/nitrate levels,
and serum lipids were all measured and recorded. After the 6 week
supplementation period, the women's measurements were taken again
and it was found that the women receiving the isoflavone supplements
experienced improved vascular reactivity in comparison to the placebo
group. Lipid levels were not found to have a significant difference
between the two groups. In conclusion, supplementation with isoflavones
may have cardiovascular benefits in postmenopausal women.
