Black cohosh and menopause

Black cohosh: just another phytoestrogen?

Article Summary:

Clinical trials on phytoestrogens in the past have had trouble yielding positive results regarding alleviation of menopausal symptoms. Soy-rich diets have been known to help certain problems associated with menopause, such as sleep disturbances and mood swings. However, the level of relief is low. Isoflavones exert competitive effects at the estrogen receptor and have the possibility of interfering with anti-proliferative properties of endocrine anti-cancer therapies.

Black cohosh extract clinical trials have resulted in more positive results. Recent studies have shown that black cohosh extract is effective against menopausal symptoms and osteoprotective properties. The studies also showed that the extract is safe even when the dosage was increased threefold. Several studies also suggest that black cohosh extract can even help control psychic problems typically found during menopausal transition.
