Black cohosh has traditionally been used among Native Americans for the treatment of amenorrhea and menopause. Black cohosh is now used mainly used as a treatment for symptoms of menopause. Extracts of black cohosh have also been shown to be useful in treating juvenile menstrual disorders and hormonal deficits in younger women. Several clinical studies using this extract have demonstrated that it is effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms. Black cohosh has shown to be safe, have a low toxicity level, and only have a few mild side effects. In Europe, black cohosh extract is often used as an effective alternative to hormone replacement therapy for menopause.
