Red
Clover and Bone Density
Article Summary:
This is a review on the study that determines the effectiveness
of a red clover-derived isoflavone supplement on bone density. There
were 205 women aged from 49 to 65 participated in a double-blind,
randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Out of the 205, 177 completed
the trial. Bone density, body composition, bone turnover markers,
and diet were measured at baseline and 12 months later. The results
showed that loss of lumbar spine bone mineral content and bone mineral
density were lower in the group with isoflavone supplement. No significant
treatment effects on hip bone mineral content or bone mineral density
were found. The data suggested that isoflavones have a potentially
protective effect on the lumbar spine in women.
