Red
Clover and Hot Flushes
Article Summary:
This is a review on the study that investigates the effectiveness
and safety of red clover isoflavone dietary supplement on hot flush
frequency in postmenopausal women. The study included a randomized,
double blind, placebo-controlled trial with 30 participants. These
participants were women with more than 12 months amenorrhoea and
were experiencing more than five flushes per day. For each woman,
single blind placebo tablets were given for 4 weeks and were subsequently
randomized to either placebo or 80 mg isoflavones for 12 more weeks.
Both the Greene Climacteric Scale Score and the decrase in number
of hot flushes per day were measured. The results showed that the
frequency of hot flushes in the isoflavone group decreased by 44%
and its Greene score decreased by 13%, while the placebo group remained
unchanged for Greene score and

16% decrease on hot flush frequency. The study suggested that isoflovone
treatment resulted in a significant reduction in hot flushes and
demonstrated the effectiveness of the red clover isoflavone dietary
supplements.
