Soy Isoflavones and Postmenopausal Women

The hypoglycemic effects of soy isoflavones on postmenopausal women.

Article Summary:

Due to the many serious side effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for postmenopausal women, this study compares the use of soy isoflavones to hormone replacement therapy, specifically relating to it's effects on glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles. Thirty postmenopausal Taiwanese women were randomly assigned to two groups, one receiving 100 mg isoflavone soft capsules, 300 mg calcium, and a blank vitamin capsule daily. The other group, being a control group, received 0.625 mg conjugated estrogen, 300 mg calcium, and a blank vitamin capsule daily. Levels of blood sugar, insulin, and lipid profiles were measured before the study, at the 3-month mark, and at the end of the 6 months. The study found that after 6 months levels of blood sugar and insulin were equally vastly reduced in both the isoflavone and estrogen treatment groups. This study shows that

isoflavones can be used to see beneficail hypoglycemic effects for postmenopausal women without the need to worry about the serious side effects that come along with hormone replacement therapy.
