Soy-Rich Diets and Vaginal Cell Maturation

The effect of a soy rich diet on the vaginal epithelium in postmenopause: a randomized double blind trial.

Article Summary:

The study explores the effects of soy photoestrogens on the vaginal cell maturation in postmenopausal women by analyzing women on a 6-month soy-rich diet. 187 women participated in the study and were randomly divided into three groups: a soy photoestrogen rich diet group; a hormonal replacement group, and a control group who received a placebo. At the beginning and end of the 6-month period each woman had a vaginal sample for hormonal cytology taken and confidentially analyzed by a cytologist. By the end of the 6 months, both the karyopycnotic index (KI) and the mauration value (MV) had significantly increased in the soy-rich diet group and in the hormone replacement group, but not in the control group. This study shows that a soy-rich diet is extremely effective in increasing vaginal cell maturation and should be taken into consideration by women looking to prevent menopausal effects and vaginal atrophy.
