Risks of Vitamin D Insufficiencies

Relation between vitamin D insufficiency, bone density, and bone metabolism in healthy postmenopausal women.

Article Summary:

A review of a study concerning the risks of Vitamin D insufficiency in postmenopausal women. Previously, Vitamin D has shown to be an important factor in risk levels of osteoporosis and fracture in postmenopausal women. In the 161 women studied, who were all healthy except for osteoporosis, Vitamin D insufficiencies were found in 39.1% of those observed.
The bone mineral density levels in the lumbar spine were found to be associated with Vitamin D, body mass index, and years after menopause. Similarly, these factors were found to be prevalent indicators of femoral neck bone mineral density.
Results from the study conclude that despite the overall health of postmenopausal women, Vitamin D insufficiencies are common risk factors. These insufficiencies lead to osteoporosis associated with increased bone remodeling and low bone mass.

Therefore, Vitamin D consumption should be monitored closely in postmenopausal woman and daily diets should be supplemented accordingly.
