K and Bone Metabolism

This study examined the effects of Vitamin K2 on bone metabolism.
The measurements taken included the markers of bone formation and
resorption, bone mineral denstity, and the incidence of vertebral
fractures. 34 Japanese postmenopausal women, all between the ages
of 48 and 82 years, were used in the study. Each women was given
a treatment of 45 mg per day of vitamin K2 for a period of 48 weeks.
The measurment results suggest that undercarboxylated OC (Glu-OC)
was converted to carboxylated OC (Gla-OC) in vivo. Also, lumbar
bone mineral density values showed no significant change since the
beginning of the study, indicating that treatment with vitamin K2
in women constantly increases bone formation markers while at the
same time converting Glu-OC to Gla-OC. The results of this study
conclude that vitamin K2 may promote healthy bone formation.
